Jame ErvinCompany: Marqeta (www.marqeta.com)
Title: Head of Marketing Insights & Operations
Placed by IMPACT: December 2017
What is the current focus of your work?
I work in marketing operations. I like to think of marketing operations as the solutions architect for the marketing team. My job is to figure out what process, systems and analytics are required for marketing to work most efficiently and drive the biggest impact on the business.
This means everything from supporting campaign execution, defining the key reports and KPIs for the marketing team, and figuring out the customer journey and processes as they move through the funnel.
My goal is to help marketing and the rest of the business understand where to focus its efforts – which programs, channels and initiatives are most effective for creating the desired business results.
What first led you to the payments / fintech industry?
I am new to the payments industry, and this is my first role in the space. I’m joining a fintech company, and I have spent most of my career in enterprise technology and software.
It is amazing how every industry has been irreversibly shaped by the internet over the past 2 decades, but it feels like in many ways some of our financial infrastructure is slower to adopt this new technology. I recently listened to a podcast about the ACH process, and I was amazed how much the current process is still influenced by the limitations from the old paper check processes.
I’m excited about Marqeta’s vision to make payments easier, and really help businesses overcome the limitations of the old infrastructure to take a streamlined approach to overcome its challenges of getting funds to the right place at the right time.
What perspective would you share with a young person considering the payments / fintech industry as a career direction?
This is a huge industry and there are all sorts of roles available that do not require you to be a money guru to excel. Take inventory of your skills and interests to understand what you’d like to do on a day-to-day basis. You may be great at coordinating, managing projects, writing, communicating or designing and you can still find a fit.
Stay curious and keep learning. It’ll take a little while to understand the lingo and how all the pieces fit together, so you’ll want to spend time learning from your colleagues. Don’t be afraid to ask the people you met how they got there. You’ll find there are a lot of unexpected paths to success.
How would you describe your experience working with IMPACT Payments Recruiting?
I haven’t worked very closely with many recruiters in the past. In my previous experiences, recruiters made initial introductions and then faded into the background. The IMPACT team was hands-on in the process from end to end. They kept me in the loop on what was happening on the end of the hiring company, gave me pointers to use as prep during the interview process, and made sure I had any necessary details to follow up appropriately. The IMPACT team shepherded me throughout the entire process and made the sometimes-fuzzy hiring process feel transparent.
